ABOUT

In the fall of 2022, RYUTOPIA's exclusive dance company, Noism Company Niigata, started activities in a new two-division system based on the RYUTOPIA residential system established by Niigata City.
In its 19th season since the establishment, the first performance under the new system was the new work "Der Wanderer" by Noism0 and Noism1, performed from January to February 2023. It is a work spun from the solos of each member, and it has made a new start as new Noism. "It is something that inspires empathy now that the future is uncertain due to the pandemic and war" - it was praised as a work suitable for the restart of the company.

The summer performance that follows will be a double bill by Jo Kanamori and Kazuyuki Futami. Sawako Iseki, Artistic Director of the International Activities Division, commissioned Kazuyuki Futami who leads La Danse Compagnie Kaleidoscope and draws attention for his original movements and compositions, to create a new work for Noism1. This will be performed together with Noism0’s new work choreographed by Jo Kanamori, General Artistic Director of Noism Company Niigata.
The key word is “Field”. Please enjoy the perspectives of the two choreographers.

Noism Company Niigata www.noism.jp

Noism is Japan’s first dance company with a permanent residency at a theatre, basing its activities at RYUTOPIA Niigata City Performing Arts Center. There are three groups: Noism0 made up of professional selected members, Noism1 the professional company, and Noism2 the trainee company. Dancers selected through auditions from Japan and around the world have moved to Niigata and are active throughout the year. Since its establishment in 2004, Noism has been performing works created at RYUTOPIA both domestically and internationally, and in addition to activities to develop globally from Niigata to the world (International Activities Division), it has also been engaged in community-based activities such as open classes for citizens and outreach to schools (Community Activities Division). The origin of Noism is “No-ism”. Without having a specific principle, Noism tries to pass on to future generations the various physical expressions that have been accumulated throughout history.

On the occasion of the performance

Sawako Iseki
Artistic Director
International Activities Division

This time, we welcome Kazuyuki Futami as a guest choreographer, and will present Noism1's new work "Floating Field" and Noism0's new work "Silentium" by Jo Kanamori as a double bill.

Main title: Field

I became interested in the unconscious field when I read a book in which a philosopher said, "We think that we make our own judgments and settle typological things, but in fact they are not settled, we just confine them to the unconscious field." I wondered how many things we confine to this field.
Freud's "conscious," "preconscious," and "unconscious".
Fields between each.
Is it possible to transcend the boundaries of these fields as a dancer?
I decided on this title because I wanted to challenge this proposition as a dance company.

Mr. Kazuyuki Futami

Mr. Kazuyuki Futami has many years of experience in the contemporary dance field in Japan, and since the foundation of La Danse Compagnie Kaleidoscope in 1996, he has won numerous awards. I myself have heard Mr. Futami's name since I returned to Japan 20 years ago, and I have seen his work several times. I believe that the creation of works derived from the body and the stories of the people behind them make him one of the most attractive choreographers in dance works in modern Japan. I also feel that Mr. Futami and Noism, who have been emphasizing collectivity for many years and are active in this country, have a common awareness of problems and sympathy. I hope that Mr. Futami will discover new field with the members of Noism1.

New work by Jo Kanamori

Kanamori's new work will be the first work of two of us, Kanamori himself, and myself, Sawako Iseki since Noism0 was launched. I am looking forward to seeing what new field the "language of silence," which Kanamori has been emphasizing in recent years, will create and be released into the world as a work of art. And for the first time in six years, we welcomed Yoshiyuki Miyamae(A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE)to make the costumes. I am confident that the sensibility and imagination of his amazing team will be one of the highlights of this work and will lead it to new field.

For creation

"Floating Field"

Direction and Choreography: Kazuyuki Futami

In a delicate and tense space with a quiet time like before a storm flowing on the stage.

Time marked by the body.

Space drawn by the body.

The form of dance that emerges from there.

The dancers repeatedly merge, assemble, leave others, and they become fluid while creating various situations.

While questioning the movements of the mind, they make full use of the dance language within themselves to move toward the place where this flow of "time", "space" and "body" leads.

"Silentium"

Direction and Choreography: Jo Kanamori

"Silentium" is a 20-minute piece that corresponds to the second half of the song "Tabula Rasa" by Arvo Pärt. Tabula Rasa means an uncarved stone slab, and Silentium is a Latin word meaning silence or darkness. I used this music as the final track for “black ice - black garden (part3)” in 2004, the year Noism was founded.

For me, it's rare to use the same music for another creation, and this time it's one of those exceptions. That's how much I was attracted to this music "now". For me, being attracted to a piece of music means that I can see the world (space/lighting/dancer) there.
Eighteen years ago, what I saw there was a man (me), and this time I saw a pair of men and women, me and Sawako. Sawako and I have never "continued" dancing together. Not only the works of Noism, but even the works released as Unit Cyan (Jo Kanamori and Sawako Iseki's unit) were with so-called developments, such as dancing solo each other and sandwiching videos, and the two of us never "continued" dancing together. We who keep dancing. The field of "us". The field of "us" is created by internalizing "you" in "me" and expanding "me" within "you". The flickering space, the silent music, and the gaze of the audience are all internalized to expand the field of "us." To share a "silence" that can never be shared if you are not there.

In the serenity filled with silence, a pair of men and women are dancing.
Stretching and contracting the bodies, transforming space, speaking of silence.
In the serenity filled with silence, music is born.
Flickering space, transforming bodies, it begins to play silence.
The antagonism of silence and silence. A third silence is born in between.
In the serenity that came again, a pair of men and women are dancing.
The serenity there is filled with a different silence than it once was.
