“The Song of Marebito”
Premiered in a circular open-air theatre with green hills in the background. After staging in Toga and Slovenia, the production makes a triumphal return with a new direction.
This work contains Noism’s recent masterpiece “Fratres I”. My creative themes of the past few years, “the individual and the collective” and “Higan (the world of alterlife) and Shigan (the real world)”, are developed through the mysterious presence of Marebito as a ritual to explore outsider. Marebito is an important concept in the country’s folklore (faith), proposed by folklorist Shinobu Orikuchi, and is a mysterious being that visits from the other world at a certain time.
(From the director’s notes by Jo Kanamori)
Created as Noism’s first open-air performance for the “Kurobe Theatre 2023 Spring” project, this work has been invited by two international festivals this year: “SCOT Summer Season 2025”, which will take place in the sacred place for theatre of Toga Village, and “Visavì Gorizia Dance Festival”, which will take place across the border in Slovenia and Italy.
After performances at the gassho-style (steep thatched roof) theatre in Toga and at the SNG Nova Gorica National Theatre in Slovenia, It will be staged in a new theatre version.
